2022年度スタンフォード大学連携科目（第4回）「シリコンバレーの起業体験から~Never, Give Up~」を開催しました
2022年5月28日（土）、スタンフォード大学SPICE(Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education)と本学が共同で開発したプログラム「スタンフォード大学連携科目（SHCPE: Stanford Hiroshima Collaboration Program on Entrepreneurship）」の第4回目の講義をZoomで開催しました。
各授業では、授業の一週間前にスタンフォード大学の学習管理システム”Canvas”で事前に資料を読み意見を投稿し、前日までにその意見にコメントしあい、意見交流をします。
今回の資料は以下の４つで、
- スタンフォード大学心理学者 キャロル・S・ドゥエック教授のインタビュー記事 (週刊東洋経済(6253), 78-79, 2010-03-27)
- ペンシルバニア大学心理学者アンジェラ・リー教授によるTED トーク「Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance」（日本語の字幕付き）
- 「インターセクショナリティ」を理解することから始める、差別のない社会への第一歩 (By Azumi Hasegawa, VOGUE 2021.3.26)
- ｢大企業を変えるのは大変すぎる｣金融界の女性3人が160億円VC設立の深い事情（President Women 2021.06.22）
ディスカッショントピックは以下の３点でした。
1. 高い水準の成果を持続的に達成するまでの道筋をつけるにあたって、「しなやかマインドセット」「グリット」「ピボット」と言った考え方の折り合いをどうつけていくのが良いだろうか。
2. ESG（環境 Environment、社会 Society、ガバナンス Governance）と多様性との間にはどのような関係性があるのだろうか。「インターセクショナリティ」という枠組みを使ってESGを促進することはできるだろうか。それが日本でベンチャー企業やVCにおける女性の進出を促すことにつながるだろうか。
3. ゲストのPatti Lee Hoffmann氏に聞きたいことや、クラス中にディスカションで取り上げたいポイント（興味をもった点、疑問に思った点など）
今回のゲストは、Triage Consulting Group 社・Flutter Eyewear 社の共同創業者であるPatti Lee-Hoffmannさんで、「シリコンバレーの起業体験から〜Never ever give up.」という講演をしてくださいました。
英語による講演だったので、同時通訳を介した講義でした。
講演では、起業に至るお話はもちろん、生い立ちや学生時代の話からも性別や人種による困難がうかがえました。
壮絶な経験をされたからこその”Never give up”というメッセージは、受講生の心を強く打つものでした。
受講生から多くの質問セッションでは、多くの質問があり、受講者の経験した性別による待遇や仕事の違いなどを踏まえた質問に、Hoffmannさんは真摯に答えられていました。
後半では、前半の講義に絡めたお話を伺った後、小グループに分かれてディスカッションを行いました。
今回のディスカッションテーマは、「自分が関わる組織（会社やコミュニティなど）における男女格差の状況について共有し、それをどう改善していくかの提案を考える」というものでした。
所属する企業などの状況などを基に話し合いをし、各グループで解決策を考えて発表しました。
会社のシステムや、人々の意識を変えること、そのための教育を行うことなど様々な形の解決策が提案されました。
全8回の講義の半分が終わり、受講者は前半の期末課題として小論文が課されています。
次回の講義は五味 和洋さんによる「シリコンバレーや米国組織におけるリーダーシップ」で、6月18日に行われます。
ゲストスピーカーのプロフィール
Patti Lee-Hoffmannさん
Although not, at first, obvious, Patti Lee-Hoffmann’s first four jobs prepared her to start a healthcare company, and later an eyewear company. While she was in college, she started her first business -- a small chain of organic produce stores. Following college, she earned her CPA at Arthur Andersen, specializing in poultry and livestock. Patti witnessed the birth of biotech by working for the Stanford professor who invented the pill. Next, she was the treasurer of a company that acquired, turned-around and sold other companies engaged in real estate, manufacturing, fashion and publishing. From these experiences, she learned to be surrounded by really, really smart people who knew everything she did not know and who generously taught her everything she needed to know.
Patti was the co-founder of Triage Consulting Group, a healthcare consulting firm. According to the Great Place to Work Institute, Triage was one of the best medium companies to work for in America – for 20 years in a row. Leadership Excellence Magazine named Triage to the list of companies with the best leadership development programs in America. For its leadership in environmental sustainability, Triage was the first San Francisco company certified to be a Green Business. Patti has been named Business Woman of the Year by the Women’s Initiative, a microfinance organization.
Patti is also the founder of Flutter Eyewear, a company that designs, manufactures and sells bespoke reading glasses.
She is the author of the book, In Great Company – Triage Consulting Group Unlocks the Secrets of Great Places to Work and contributed a chapter in Dear Chairwoman: Letters from Today’s Trailblazing Women.
She serves on the boards of organizations in the fields of education, micro-finance, women, children and music. With her husband and two daughters, Patti lives in San Francisco, California.
